Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't creating heat, the majority of them can be linked back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not handled, your system could suddenly stop operating and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The average life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself plenty of time to research and weigh all of your choices.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Imagine the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that you could spend on a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the prior two years - a new system might be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any strange dings coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises at the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is switching on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home may start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies might notice an uptick in their symptoms. A few other indicators are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.

If any of these indicators sound like what you are undergoing with your furnace, it may be time to start thinking about a new system.
