When winter strikes and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, the majority of them can be traced back to the lack of furnace service and maintenance. If furnace concerns are not taken care of, your system could suddenly stop running and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are a couple warning signs you can watch for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a good idea to start furnace shopping now. Choosing a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make on the fly. Give yourself a bit of time to research and weigh all of your possibilities.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they get older and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been correctly maintained. Think of the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last couple years of a furnace's life are when your system encounters the most breakdowns. Start adding up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system may be a better option.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird sounds coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their lifespan. If your furnace is turning on and off frequently or blowing cool air, it's time to look at getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home could start feeling stuffy and any family members with allergies could notice more symptoms. Some other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
